Did you know that wherever you are in Montgomery County, you’re never more than 2 miles from a park?
Parks provide extraordinary opportunities for reflection, rejuvenation, and relaxation. You and your family likely visit Montgomery County Parks several times a year, maybe once a month, every week, or even more! You have probably shared a picnic, taken a bike ride, enjoyed a baseball, soccer, or tennis game or walked your dog in the park. Your parks are safe, clean and a great place to spend time outdoors alone or together as a family.
Your parks are also suffering.
Over the past 10 years, the total acreage managed by M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks has increased by 11% to over 35,000 acres- that’s 11% of the land mass of the entire county. Over the same time period, the staff available to support the work program has decreased by 22% and funding has been declining at an alarming rate for the past three years.
“What we’re doing to the park system is really a shame.” County Council President Valerie Ervin (Washington Post 2/23/11)
What might this mean for your favorite park? You will see the grass mowed less frequently, repairs to playgrounds, tennis courts and other facilities will take longer and any planned improvements or renovations will be significantly delayed.
